School Board Meetings
School boards meet monthly on a regular schedule, set by each school district, on school property. The meetings are advertised and open to the public. Special meetings may be called by the chairman of the board or by two members by giving a 48-hour notice to the public and other members of the board.
Anyone interested in attending or participating in a school board meeting should call the school district office for times and places.
School Trustees
School boards have administrative and advisory powers. They make policy decisions, have the ultimate authority over the employment and dismissal of district personnel, approve school curriculum and textbook adoption, set attendance and tuition policy within the parameters of state law, develop and approve budgets, negotiate labor contacts, provide for school buildings and their maintenance, and re responsible for seeing that all the requirements of sate law pertaining to schools are carried out and enforced. They also call for, conduct, and certify elections for the school district.
School trustees are elected to staggered 3-year terms. They must be residents of and registered voters in their district. School elections are administered by the school district. Not less than 40 days before the election a candidate must submit to the clerk of school district a petition of nomination signed by five registered voters of that district. School board elections are held every year on the first Tuesday in May. A recent provision in the law allows for school boards to cancel balloting and elect trustees by acclamation no later than 14 days before the election if the number of candidates filing or officially declaring as write-in candidates for the available positions is equal to the number of positions to be elected and there are not other ballot issues to be decided.
