Public Health Nurse
County-wide health services, including family planning, immunization clinics, communicable disease surveillance, and emergency preparedness services are administered by the Ravalli County Public Health Department. Community health nurses also plan and coordinate community and school health programs. The Department contracts for the services of a Nurse Practitioner for the Family Planning Program.
County Health Officer
The Board of Health appoints the County Health Officer who is a physician, or who has a Master’s Degree in Public Health, or who has equivalent and appropriate experience. The duties include investigation and in so far as possible, control of sources of communicable and environmental disease and dangers to the public health. Dr. Carol Calderwood is the Ravalli County Health Officer.
Board of Health
Montana law authorizes counties to form a Board of Health to supervise public health matters. General supervision of health boards is the responsibility of the Montana Department of Health and Human Services.
The Ravalli County Board of Health consists of the County Commissioners, who serve during their term of office, and two members appointed by them for staggered three-year terms.
Meetings are held the second Wednesday of the month in the Commissioner's Meeting Room in the Administration Building at 215 South 4th Street in Hamilton. The Health Officer, the Health Nurse, and the Environmental Health Office (Sanitarian) report on their activities at each meeting. A citizen must contact the Commissioners Office at 375-6500 at least five days before a regularly scheduled meeting to place an item on the agenda.
